Modus is a small, minimal coffee roaster just off of Hastings near the bottom of Burnaby Mountain in a quiet neighborhood. They roast their own beans and offer a wide range of specialty coffees. Selection of coffees rotates, and they offer a pour over bar. Baked goods re limited in number but very well made. The ambiance is excellent--while the seating is small and less cozy than I typically enjoy, Modus creates a relaxing and vibrant environment through an open layout and lo-fi on high quality sound system. I would say this is a very relaxing and inviting environment. Not much parking. There are three outlets--some behind benches--which can be used. Nice and bright inside. The coffee was very good at first experience. My latte came at a perfect temperature to drink right away, so ask for it warmer if you're taking to go. Flavour in the steamed milk had a great soft texture that blended into the rest of the drink. The flavour was light without being too subtle, and there was no hint of astringency anywhere. I get a warm oakey flavour from the late that lingers after each sip. Takes qualities I have enjoyed in some light roasts, and keeps them with the flavour of a darker roast. The scent was a bit weak, which was emphasized by the sterility of the environment, likely due to opening recently Worth a visit, though be aware their limited hours Thurs-Sun 8am-3pm.
