I realized a few days after finishing Remix some notes that I was already working on another remix! I have a soft spot for the style used in hi-fi technology posters and the design style of the 50s-80s that blended form into function with futuristic and sculptural elements. Firm colours, clean contours, and detailed control knob. When ideating styles for a PlayStation focused event, I was inspired by the PlayStation2 advertising⊹ ⊹ Scroll down to see what I mean. designs from the early 2000s and how they borrowed from this world.
It seemed that the simplicity would make it easy to recreate, however without the right tools to emulate the colour and lighting in-studio it presented a challenge. The elements were simple: A gradient background with analog noise, a dramatically lit PS2, and sans-serif text. I used a similarly framed photo of my own PS2 and created the background from a radial gradient. To form the amorphous blob I used transform splines to squash and stretch the contour before adding gaussian monochrome noise. The text was simple once I found an otf someone had recreated. The real challenge came from matching the lighting on the console. Achieving the look involved several masked gradients with different blending modes and opacities--with a lot of trial and error. I am quite happy with the result, although the fine texture of the noise gets lost in the compression and the colours aren't bang-on. If I had the chance I would try to replicate the look using lighting and coloured gels. This was a fun experiment in design and my first time using a raster editor for a project in a while. I suggest you try it out!
